We were. For the next 30 years any time I left a stage feeling like I'd sucked and/or we (the band) had sucked, I'd compliment us by saying "We were really loud tonight!" "If you can't be good, be loud" should probably be the R&R mantra. T.W. Brings back lots of good and bad memories and I even remember some of the bands from back then. I saw you play with the tracers when I was in high school. You guys were sure loud. No matter what I was doing, no matter what band I was in at the time, you just seemed to be a couple octaves above what I was doing back then. As a EE, you continued that trend. I will always be indebted to you for your generosity and for exposing me to Howard Roberts just before you left town.T.W. I played violin in the Jr Hi orchestra, and drums in the Sr Hi Band (We marched in the Rose Bowl Parade). I played many drum gigs at the Hillcrest and the VFW with Larry Grantham's band (started on bass, but graduated to drums). I did some recording at Blakely's studio. Got my EE degree from KU, and played drums in the precursor band to the Flippers and a couple of other bands while I was there. Your blog brought back many memories. Mostly, it was a backwards, red neck, barely educated mostly-white middle class Kansas town. Now, it's less white, less middle class, and even more backwards. T.W. I left Kansas in 1968 and haven't been back since. I had no idea the town had fallen so far and I'm sorry to hear that. It looks sad and defeated. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
